I got a little treat for all you lovers of great post punk from the late 70’s and early 80’s. This week is devoted solely to my favorite genre of music from the greatest period for music ever. Hang on, cause it’s gonna be a great ride!
I was thinking about 1980 the other day while I was out working in the yard…specifically I was thinking about the summer of 1979. I was playing basketball like 8 hours a day, flying like superman (that why I was nicknamed Luke Skywalker in my neighborhood), and having the time of my life. I even dunked for the first time that summer (if your a basketball player, there are two moments you never forget…the first and the last time you dunked). I had discovered some great record shops in Kent, Ohio, and was listening to some awesome music. But the best part of that summer was my girl friend, Tina. Now, I know everyone will tell you they had a smoking hot girl friend…honestly, have you ever heard anyone tell you they had an ugly one? But Tina was something else. She was…in a world…wild. Beautiful and wild. So I had a great summer 29 years ago, right before I started high school.
But alas, summer came, and school started. I have no clue why we drifted apart, really. I know she didn’t really care for the music I was just getting into (punk, post punk, etc). We really didn’t have a lot in common, either, other than hormones. As soon as school started, we broke up. Six months or so later, I learned she was pregnant and had dropped out of school. Believe it or not, after we broke up, I never really talked to her again. I don’t think I even ever saw her again, to be honest. But for one summer, her and I had way more fun that two 16 year old kids ought to have had. It was the greatest summer of my youth.
