MORE GOTH FROM THE LATE 80′S EARLY 90′S

September 3rd, 2008 · 4 Comments

Yesterday, I took a look at the early days of goth, and how it pretty much was the off spring of the post punk and industrial scenes. Today I wanted to take a look at how goth evolved in the mid to late 80’s.

Like I said yesterday, goth is maybe the most misunderstood type of music there is. It’s NOT Marilyn Manson jumping around worshiping the devil. In fact, if you listen to most music from the 80’s labeled as goth, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell it from new wave. In fact, by the late 80’s, when hair bands ruled MTV and radio, new wave was pretty much played out, and all that was left from that scene was goth. Next to the college rock/American underground music scenes, the best music of the late 80’s came out of the goth scene. This list is one of the better ones I’ve done, of any genre. Like AJ said in the comments yesterday, there is just so much great music that came out of this scene that I could go on and on. Enjoy!

  1. Love and Rockets - Haunted When The Minutes Drags
  2. The Cure - Fascination Street
  3. Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up
  4. Tones On Tail - Performance
  5. Southern Death Cult - Fatman
  6. Gene Loves Jezebel - Motion Of Love
  7. Flesh For Lulu - I Go Crazy
  8. All About Eve - Scarlet
  9. The Lords Of The New Church - Russian Roulette
  10. Love and Rockets - Welcome Tomorrow

    another great flashback of a post, still think theres a few bands that have been omitted, more alternative and goth please, if my turntable hadn’t broken i’d be ravaging my record collection right now as my wife used to dj at one of those sweaty little goth clubs and we have some awesome vinyl as a result

    I only recently realized that I love goth. I knew I loved the Cure and Love & Rockets, but almost all these bands (yesterday and today) are great! Of course, I had never placed Love & Rockets or Gene Loves Jezebel in goth, so that obscured my understanding of what goth is. Like you said, a misunderstood genre.

    @Robert Lindsey:

    I think gothic rock, or goth, is maybe the most misunderstood genre of music ever. Mention goth to the average people, and they’ll probably tell you it’s satanic worship music, or something equally dumb. Truth is that it’s really just another flavor of post punk/new wave. Like you, most people love at least a few “goth” bands and songs. I’m glad you enjoyed the music…I know it was a real treat to put together for me!

    @A.J:

    I would venture to say there are a WHOLE lot more…I just scratched the surface with mainly the most popular and well known bands. Believe me, I’ll be revisiting this whole thing again, and next time, I’ll bust out some Sex Gang Children, Fahrenheit 451 and some .45 Grave. Cheers to the wife…and I got some serious jealousy over all the old vinyl you got laying around.
