I love the 80’s just as much as anyone…it was after all the decade I came of age. I was 16 in 1980, and 26 in 1989, and in between, grew from a child into a man. Or at least I think I did. Mentally, I guess I’m still about 17, but hey, that ain’t all bad! It keeps me young. But I digress. While the 80’s were great, and had lots of great tunes, not everything was great about it. While there was a thriving underground music scene, by the mid 80’s, radio mainly focused on cheesy pop stuff. It was, in a word, horrible.
Two bands here that in the 80’s really incurred my hate back then, and my scorn for their fans. The first was Loverboy. If there was ever a band I could not stand, that was it. In the early 80’s, at least at the bars of Kent, Ohio, everyone wore those stupid ass bandannas rolled up either and tied either around their head, or their neck. Everyone thought it was cool to dress like that. Even my friends.
The second was Bon Jovi. Christ, I hated walking into clubs and seeing a million Bon Jovi wanna-be’s hanging around, with overly teased big assed hair. It was bad enough that I stopped going to bars back then. Any way, enjoy the 80’s cheese. I’m off to training.
- Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead Or Alive
- Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes
- Culture Club - Karma Chameleon
- Samantha Fox - Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now
- Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue
- Bobby McFerrin - Don’t Worry, Be Happy
- The Power Station - Some Like It Hot
- Huey Lewis and the News - The Power Of Love
- Loverboy - Turn Me Loose
- Hall & Oates - Private Eyes

Holy crappoli, Batman….this list is the very reason I missed out on the *good* part of the 80’s until 20 years later. I was convinced that this *dreck* was the only music that existed between the spoon-fed pablum shoved down our throats from Emp-TV and mainstream AOR radio (makes me feel a bit nauseous to even write that).
The cheese was free-flowing and rich enough to cause massive indigestion. That’s what makes me grateful for the Internet and intelligent, cutting-edge dj’s like David Marsden (http://www.marsdenglobal.com/) who still take music to its wild, unique and creative side. I’ve said it ad nauseum, but it’s worth repeating: I wish I had been fortunate enough to have someone like Marsden/ a radio station like the old CFNY out of Canada to show me the way through the alternative side of the 80’s. Luckily, I am able to discover/enjoy it before it’s too late.
Oh, and DJ Info? I thought you loved your readers…why would you subject us to such grossly cruel and inappropriate punishment? *Sniff*
(Enjoy your trip)

@MissParker0106:
In the absence of evil, no one would know what good truly is. In the absence of crap like this, we would have nothing to measure just how great the stuff know to be good really is.
I’ve made up for the punishment with what I consider a pretty decent post today. Hope your week is going better!

Luckily, I was in the Army when Bon Jovi was big, so no one I knew had big hair. Isn’t that the greatest song ever though?
