Whats better on a Friday than to get the party started with some great tunes from some great 80’s underground-ish bands? Trust me, you do NOT want to miss the songs on this list. All the great ones are here…Minutemen, The Vaselines, Mission of Burma, Galaxie 500 (it’s been WAY too long since I played any Galaxie 500!) and on and on. And speaking of Galaxie 500, I even have another cover for Miss Parker over at Rave and Roll…a great cover of Joy Division’s Ceremony.
So, enjoy the trip back in time to the great 80’s, and enjoy the start of the weekend!
- Minutemen - The Red And The Black
- Mission Of Burma - All World Cowboy Romance
- The Vaselines - You Think You’re A Man
- Modern English - Gathering Dust
- Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - So In Love
- The Stranglers - Always The Sun
- The Teardrop Explodes - Ha Ha I’m Drowning
- The Jesus and Mary Chain - The Living End
- Ultra Vivid Scene - H Like In Heaven
- Galaxie 500 - Ceremony

Have I told you lately how much you ***rock***? No? Well, I’m here to say it…a bit late this morning, still rubbing sleep from my eyes. I was up until after midnight (highly unusual for me on a weeknight) listening to David Marsden’s show because I’m not working today.
The “Ceremony” cover is superb - haunting, lilting, very Joy Division-esque. Thank you for thinking of me. TGIF!

One more thing - as I listened to this and sped it up in my mind, I realized I had this track - but by New Order, not Joy Division. I looked on Wiki and they have an entry that states this song was the first “New Order” song recorded after Ian Curtis left and they changed their name, but before Curtis took his life. So, they were very new.

It’s a totally different sound from the one New Order would later become associated with - definitely more of the Joy Division influence, so I can see where the confusion would arise.
I still love ya!

@MissParker0106:
Well, you know I would never want to disagree with ya, but I loves my Joy Division!
Ceremony was indeed New Orders first single, but it was a re-recorded version. The original, as sung by Ian, is on a compilation called Still, which is basically a bunch of live recording and studio outtakes put together by the label for no other reason than to make money.
I know, I’m acting like one of those snobs we both love to hate, but sometimes I can’t help myself. I REALLY need a cold beer right now…a Stella would work, but a Corona is the preferred method of intoxication these days!

I look at all of this as a learning experience and I’m always the first to eat crow when I’m wrong.
I’m going to send you a file via yahoo - please ID it as New Order or Joy Division. I have it as NO and I could very well be wrong.
Coronas for both of us!

The Minutemen and Mission of Burma are new to me, (since reading Rip it Up and Our Band Could Be Your Life). One thing I liked about those books was they each discussed how hard it was to find new music back then.
Man I love the Modern English! They sure deserved more than one hit.
