AN REM HOLIDAY WEEKEND!

Posted by Infonistacrat on Friday, July 3rd, 2009

I’m sitting here in the Detroit airport, waiting on my wifes plane to get in from Cali, and decided that instead of working, it would be better to listen to some music, write up a post, and have a little fun. I can only take work so long, and besides, everyone else in my [...]

SHUFFLING THE iPOD, DAY 3

Posted by Infonistacrat on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Last day in a hotel room for a few days…tomorrow, I am heading home. Sometimes, even with the roughest of jobs, you get a week where the stars align, the universe opens up, and everything goes well. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s a beautiful thing. And make no [...]

BACK TO THE FUTURE, I GUESS

Well, I had the new theme up for a bit, but there were a few tweaks I just could not get worked out. Mainly, I simply could not get it to work with Wordpress Stats. There were a few other things that kind of bugged the hell out of me, that I could [...]

WHAT WERE WE THINKING?!? QUESTIONABLE 80′S HITS

Posted by Infonistacrat on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

I thought I would mix it up a little today, and post some 80’s hits that while they were hits, I doubt many people would actually fess up to actually liking these songs. But I’ll bet no matter what your taste in music is, there is at least one or two songs on the list that you actually remember and can sing the words to, even if it is only when your alone. I’ll admit…there is a song or two here that don’t bother me too badly. Still, I wouldn’t call any of these songs stellar examples of songwriting.

Maybe the worst offender on the list is Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top. Now, don’t get me wrong…there are some ZZ Top songs that are crazy great. Blue Jean Blues and Jesus Left Chicago are two that comes to my mind. But for a couple years in the early to mid-80’s, ZZ Top put out some absolute crap. Remember those inane music videos with the cars and furry guitars? Garbage. Yet, I bet there isn’t anyone reading this that doesn’t at least hum along to this song when you hear it. Amazing, huh?

The second biggest offender is U2. To me, U2 is a band that when they are good, they are really really great. On the flip side, when they suck, they really suck. You would think that collaborating with a blues legend would produce something memorable. Unfortunately, it produced When Love Comes To Town. Suckius Optimus.

It all goes to show you…it doesn’t have to be good to be a classic, and it doesn’t have to be good to have been a hit. So I ask again, what the hell were we thinking back in the 80’s?

  1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Two Tribes
  2. John Hiatt – Have A Little Faith In Me
  3. The Rolling Stones – Start Me Up
  4. Heart – Alone
  5. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – Refugee
  6. U2 With BB King – When Love Comes To Town
  7. ZZ Top – Sharp Dressed Man
  8. Van Halen – Jump
  9. Scorpions – Still Lovin You
  10. Bryan Adams – Run To You

That’s a nifty selection of 80s crap to love to hate..
So here’s a big gleeful “Ewww!”

    @Stephen:

Exactly the reaction I was hoping for! There was just so much crap released in the 80’s…almost as much as the crap that’s been released this decade! Thanks for the coment.

That’s the best you can do? There was an awful lot of schlocky music produced in the 90s.

John Hyatt? Cut the guy a break. He’s a troubadour who happened to catch some minor success with mid-career album. Good for him. It’s not like one of those songs you have to listen to every time you walk into Target.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker’s “Refuge” was from the 70s. Maybe you’re too young, but this song made sense then.

No, it’s probably not the best I can do, but it’s probably as bad as I want to get. The list is supposed to be tongue in cheek, not a real honest to goodness list of the worst of. After all, I do have my standards, low that they may be. These are songs I can at least listen to all the way through, and even find myself singing along to. I would NEVER post a song I can’t at least make it all the way through.

And your right about Refuge. I totally went brain dead on that one. I’m in my mid-40’s, so I pretty much remember from about ‘74 on as far as music goes.
