GREAT 90′S ALTERNATIVE MUSIC

June 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments

OK, so by now, most people realize, hopefully, that the 90’s were about more than grunge and post-grunge bands. There was an alternative scene that was almost as vibrant as talented as the underground scene of the 80’s. Almost, because to an old dude like me, the 80’s had it all. But the 90’s were right up there, thats for sure.

Yes, Mark Lanegan and Mudhoney were part of the grunge scene…Mudhoney, along with Mother Love Bone, were the legends everyone looked up to, and Lanegan with the Screaming Trees made their impact. I put them here because they belong here, honestly. Mudhoney is perhaps the most overlooked band of the 90’s. Their Fuzzbox CD is among the best of the 90’s, and if you can get a copy, do buy it. It’s what was really all about. Mark Lanegan, on the other hand, just has a set of pipes that are among the best in the business, even today, and his solo work puts the stuff he does with the Trees to shame!

I also threw up some Tom Waits…love him or hate him (I love his stuff, personally!), you can’t deny the man’s talent and longevity. He’s been around so long, and done so much, and is so easy to over look, but the cat is legend. Pure and simple. And speaking of legend, Nick Cave is right up there. Birthday Party, then the Bad Seeds…most are lucky to lead one great band, but to lead two, very unusual. But, if you really want your mind blown, pick up some of his stuff in Grinderman, his newest endeavor.

The rest of the stuff here is all amazing. My love for the Breeders is well known to readers here. Lately, I’ve been on a huge PJ Harvey kick. I was aware of here in the 90’s (Down By The Water is not only a great tune, but was a pretty big hit), but I never really listened to her a lot. Shame, because I missed something special. Anyway, everything here is top shelf…enjoy!

  1. Sebadoh - The Freed Pig
  2. Cracker - Get Off This
  3. The Afghan Whigs - Going To Town
  4. the Breeders - New Year
  5. Belle & Sebastian - I Could Be Dreaming
  6. Mudhoney - Hate The Police
  7. PJ Harvey - Down By The Water
  8. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Do You Love Me?
  9. Mark Lanegan - Hit The City
  10. Tom Waits - Hold On
