MUSIC FROM THE JUNO SOUNDTRACK

June 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments

A little departure for me here, though not as much as it might appear at first. My wife and I were sitting around on Friday night, and decided to rent the movie Juno. Now, I agreed mostly because I figured it would keep her busy, and I could read my book and it would be a nice, peaceful evening. Little did I know that the movie was actually engaging. Actually, I was pretty much drawn in by all the great music in the background. The music is pretty mellow, and I immediately knew it would make a perfect post for a Sunday.

The movie itself, while entertaining, actually contained a twisty little subplot that, unless your a major music lover, would go straight over your head. I know my wife missed it. If you’ve seen the movie, you probably know what I’m talking about. There was the part when the guy says he was on stage with the Melvins in 1993 in Chicago, and that 93 was the best year for music. Juno replies that he’s nuts, and that 1977 was the magic year. An argument I’ve went back and forth over in this blog many times. Then in another scene, they are strumming a guitar and playing a Hole tune (which doesn’t show up in the soundtrack, BTW). Lastly, after a heated argument, Juno announces that she “had bought another Sonic Youth album, and it sucked. It was just a bunch of noise”. Whoever wrote the screenplay most certainly has a deep love and knowledge of music, for sure.

Anyway, the soundtrack is very cool, and very quirky, and very mellow, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. Have a great Sunday!

    @sarah:

    I agree. A lot of movies have great music in them, but it seems that very few know how to actually use the music to make the film great. It didn’t hurt that the character Juno was exactly the type of girl I fell for in High School, or that in I actually was a skinny dude whoran track in high school, and although my girl friend didn’t get pregnant, we had a very bad scare. It was certainly a movie I could relate too.
