OK, so right off the bat, I KNOW I’m gonna screw this list up, at least in the eyes of some people. Honestly, picking my favorite Ramones tunes is like picking my favorite potato chips from a big bag of chips. They are all pretty damn good for the most part. So anyway, after spending the past couple hours listening to the a new gem I just added to my collection, the Ramones Anthology, I picked out 10 that I think rise to the top. At least they do for me.
A couple are pretty well know to even casual listeners of the Ramones. 53rd & 3rd is flat out my favorite. It has that old school, Punk 77 feel to it that gets me going. Same with Judy Is A Punk and Beat On The Brat. Especially Beat On The Brat, which is probably my second favorite by the boys. As I said though, I had to leave some real great tunes off here. Blitzkrieg Bob is missing, as is Rock N Roll High School and I Wanna Be Sedated. Great songs, just not my favorites. One that almost made the list, and trust me, I really debated this is Danny Says. It would definitely make my second ten for sure. It’s just such a departure from what they normally record, and it’s just flat out a great little tune. Another one I almost included was Cretin Hop. As Maxwell Smart used to say “Missed it by THAT much!” Enjoy!

A buddy of mine and I were having a discussion about the Ramones’ early albums.
I said “Leave Home” was better than their first album, because the sound was sharper.
He replied, “Yes that’s true; the sound on the first album is a bit duller. But which has more physical impact: Being hit by a wall, or being hit by the corner of the wall?”

Well, I wouldn’t say you “screwed it up”
But, you are missing MY favorite Ramones song, and you should check it out if you haven’t yet.
“I Don’t Wanna Grow Up”. It was from later in their career.

@Silent 3:
Your friend has it right, I would say. Part of the love I have for punk 77 is exactly that it hits you in the face like a sledge hammer. I think the Ramones get a bad wrap…stereotyped as a rough, barely talented punk band. But their catalog tells a far different story. The could be polished when they needed to be, and they can bring it home when they want to. The REAL magic of the Ramones, in my opinion, is that they are one of the few bands who can do BOTH in the same song.
