A BUNCH O’ GREAT SONGS FROM THE 90′S

June 10th, 2008 · 17 Comments

Ok, before I get to the music, I’m going to tell you something that will absolutely blow your minds. So, here goes. I have super bad allergies…I mean really bad ones, and have since I was a kid. Well, about 11 years ago, they developed into polyps, and I lost my sense of smell and taste. So, basically for 11 years, I had no smell or taste. Well, a month ago, as I was sitting at my daughters college graduation and suddenly I was able to smell. And for the last month, I’ve had a VERY strong sense of taste and smell. So today, I was grabbing something from the kitchen cabinet, and caught this strong oder. So I started grabbing all the spices and smelling them, taking long sniffs and enjoying all the wonderful odors. Vanilla really smells GREAT! So does cinnamon. Take a break from life one day, and smell the spices. I know, it’s weird, but man, it’s so good!

So todays music. I tried to grab some tunes that might not be real familiar looking at the names, but once you hear the tunes, you’ll know what they are. Except may be the school house rock tune Three Is A Magic Number. I wish we could have had more Blind Melon music. I really think it was a tragedy, that. Anyway, you also might not recognize Frank Black’s tune, unless your a huge fan. but give it a listen, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. But the rest? Grade A stuff here. Enjoy!

  1. Bjork - Human Behaviour
  2. Belly - Feed The Tree
  3. Michael Penn - No Myth
  4. Aimee Mann - Superball
  5. Inspiral Carpets (w. Mark E. Smith) - I Want You
  6. Dinosaur Jr - Feel The Pain
  7. Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod
  8. Dada - Who Are You
  9. Blind Melon - Three is A Magic Number
  10. Frank Black - Space Is Gonna Do Me Good

    I disagree with you re Blind Melon (I really hate Shannon Hoon’s [sp?] voice).

    But - congrats on getting back smell and taste! Vanilla is the best. Enjoy!

    Yeah, Shannon Hoon’s voice is an acquired taste. Same congrats on the senses. I’ve suffered from crazy allergies my entire life as well. I’ve had polyps but never lost a sense (save taste for a couple of days, but that wasn’t so bad. I caught up on my vegetable eating.).

    Lotta Jims on here these days. Good sign…

    “Jesus Built My Hotrod” is a gem — what a great combination of rockabilly, speed metal, and nutty glee. Hard to believe that’s from the same band that did “Work for Love.”

    What the…? My comment (it was the 2nd comment from a Jim) was here - now it’s gone. More trouble with the ISP?

  • 6 Jim // Jun 12, 2008 at 11:17 pm

    Ah. Nevermind. Missed the “awaiting moderation” note… duh.

    @Jim:

    No trouble with the ISP…just a life gone mad on my end of things. For some reason, work has decided that 10 hours a day is not sufficient to take from me, so it’s uped it’s demand to ever waking second this past week. Unfortunately, work pays my bills…I am a slave to the wage, for sure!

    Blind Melon’s “Three Is A Magic Number” is well known to us Aussies as it is used on a commercial for a cell phone company over here.

    Great blog.

    @Will:

    Thats pretty cool actually. The song is pretty much unknown here, except for Blind Melon fans. I have to admit I didn’t hear it until a few years after it came out. Very cool. Thanks!

    No Myth is an inspired choice.
    I love the meter of the lyric delivery.

    Anyone who’s been in a long term relationship will appreciate his effort to deprogram his mind back to single status — saying “I” rather than “we” — but failing:

    ” I… yes, I guess we could say I ”

    a very clever song.
    good pick.

    @Silent 3:

    It is a great song on a lot of levels. One of those kind of forgotten gems from a decade that had a lot of forgotten gems. I’m a huge fan of lyrics, and a well turned phrase, much as I suspect you are, from the sounds of it. As you mention, Michael Penn delivers plenty in this tune. Definitely a favorite I had long forgotten about.

    You seem to be a very positive, level-headed person, and one who has great taste in music. For this, I must commend you, as well as for yourt attitude regarding your allergies. A weaker-minded person — like myself — would probably have gone insane. Did your love of music increase once you lost those two senses?

    I am glad to hear your senses have returned. And thanks for everything.

    @J du Bois:

    No, actually, music has always been a pretty important part of my life. It has helped me through some very rough times in my life. As far as my outlook on life, I’ve kind of developed over the years a pretty easy going attitude. I generally feel like the universe has a bit of a flow to it, and carries you along. You can somewhat influence the direction, but ultimately, things happen for a reason. Fatalism, I suppose. To me, the truly unhappy people are the people that fight against the direction of the universe. It works for me at least.

    > The song “Three Is A Magic Number” is pretty much unknown here, except for Blind Melon fans.

    The original version was featured on the Schoolhouse Rock animated shorts that were shown on TV in the early 1970’s.

    If you were watching cartoons on TV during that time, you know this by heart, along with songs that taught you the Preamble to the US constitition, and how a bill becomes law.

    I, myself, don’t know this, but my wife (who is younger than me) jumped for joy and started singing along when she heard this on the radio.

    @Silent 3:

    You know whats weird…I remember most of those School House Rock Saturday morning songs, and a few I can still sing, like Conjunction Junction and I’m Just A Bill, but I don’t remember this one.

    There is also a great rendition of the Banana Splits theme by Liz Phair that was recorded about the same time, I think.

    I’m trying to imagine what it’s like to go without smelling and tasting for 11 years. I think that if I could suddenly taste, then I would suddenly plump up too, there’s just too much good tasting stuff out there.
