AN REM HOLIDAY WEEKEND!

Posted by Infonistacrat on Friday, July 3rd, 2009

I’m sitting here in the Detroit airport, waiting on my wifes plane to get in from Cali, and decided that instead of working, it would be better to listen to some music, write up a post, and have a little fun. I can only take work so long, and besides, everyone else in my [...]

SHUFFLING THE iPOD, DAY 3

Posted by Infonistacrat on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Last day in a hotel room for a few days…tomorrow, I am heading home. Sometimes, even with the roughest of jobs, you get a week where the stars align, the universe opens up, and everything goes well. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s a beautiful thing. And make no [...]

BACK TO THE FUTURE, I GUESS

Posted by Infonistacrat on Monday, June 29th, 2009

Well, I had the new theme up for a bit, but there were a few tweaks I just could not get worked out. Mainly, I simply could not get it to work with Wordpress Stats. There were a few other things that kind of bugged the hell out of me, that I could [...]

SOME EARLY 80′S TREATS TO START THE WEEK!

Posted by Infonistacrat on Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Memorial day…big holiday, lots of family, BBQ, etc. So here is how mine went. Beautiful weather. Check. Som good food waiting to be cooked. Check. Squirrel committing suicide by diving into my little towns power sub-station, thereby knocking all the power out to the town? CHECK! That’s right. This little critter caused a fire in the towns little substation about 9 am yesterday, and it wasn’t until 5 that the power came back on. Made for an interesting, and BORING, day.

I don’t think people realize how important something like electricity it until it’s not there. No TV. No internets. No radio. (We couldn’t find any batteries for it, and it just didn’t seem worth the effort to lift the garage door manually to go out and get some. lol) We were suddenly turned into turn of the century people, and honestly, we didn’t pass the test very well.

I grabbed my iPod, only to find the battery on it had been drained during the outdoor work the previous two days. So no music kind of pissed me off. I did read a lot…two back issues of Time. I also did the crossword puzzle. (I addicted to 4 things in this world…my wife, music, Suduko, and Crosswords). I also read a book a bought at the airport the other day, Jeff Shaara’s The Rising Tide. Great book.

Towards the end, I commented on how utterly miserable we were after just 8 hours of no juice. If this was a test, we failed miserably. When the power did come back on, I was hoping like a little boy, doing a victory dance. First thing I did was fire up my computer, and start listening to some tunes to put this post together. Music, the food of life! Enjoy

Your description of life without electricity was funny, yet dredged up bad memories of hurricane Wilma in Oct 2005 and no power for over a week. It’s amazing what you find to occupy your mind when the world is in chaos around you. I fell asleep every night with a flashlight propped on my shoulder, reading a book. And, when you live in the great state of FL with “Florida Flicker and Flash” as your power company, several-hour-long power outages are the norm. My company has a generator to keep us up and running when a squirrel wanders into the power grid. :-)

Anyway, thanks for the music and hope you have a better week.

The 2004 hurricane season was one of the reasons I don’t live in Florida anymore. Even with the 4 hurricanes that threatened Tampa that year, I think the longest we ever lost power for was like 3 days, and that wasn’t Jeanne hit. I remember Jeanne made this turn, and looked like it was going out to see, so we left to go on vacation. It then made this freaky loop, and buzzed right across Florida. That was also the only hurricane the really did any damage by knocking over one of out oak trees, just missing the house. And we missed it all!

Fortunately for us, the 2004/2005 hurricane seasons were aberrations. Aside from Andrew in ‘91, things had been relatively calm for the previous 30 years. Let’s hope we slip back into a 30-year “slump” once again. Meanwhile, I still don’t have to shovel any snow. ;-)
