JOHN PEEL PUNK ROCK SPECIAL FROM 1976

May 16th, 2008 · 16 Comments

HELP NEEDED!!!! A friend is desperately looking for Lisa Dal Bello’s (known only as “Dalbello”) two albums “Whomanfoursays” (1984) and “She” (1987). Anyone out there have a link to it they can share? You can either post the link in the comments section, or send it to me as jim @ hometownproject . org Remove the spaces in the email address of course. Huge props and special thanks go to anyone that can help me out here!

Today I bring you John Peel’s Punk Rock Special, from December 10th 1976. Special guest was The Damned, a great punk if ever there was one. This little gem is, in my ever so humble (not!) opinion, radio history. This is, I believe, the entire show form that day, and features some great songs, as well as some amazing performances by The Damned.

I’ve just in recent years discovered just how great a band The Damned really were. If you listen to the performances here, you can see that there were probably 5 years ahead of their time. They sound an awful lot like southern California hardcore from the early 80’s. Anyway, it’s kind of to hear them call John Peel “dad” in their first track.

Not to be missed is John’s wrap-up, and his thoughts on punk. If ever there was a guy who I wish I could share a pint and listen to music with, it’s John Peel. The guy was just spot on with his taste in music. For the people on my side of the Atlantic, listening to him is like listening to that all knowing old professor…it’s an education in music not to be missed.

I’m officially on vacation…there may be a post tomorrow, there may now. It all depends on how bent I get tonight. Been awhile since I really hit that tequila bottle hard enough to hurt…I may just give it a go tonight! Peace, and enjoy!

    Not sure why, but I can’t get track 7 to DL.

    Cool blog. I really enjoyed your favorite tracks. Didn’t DL very many, because I had most of them already. I must compliment your taste in music.

    I just arrived a few minutes ago, and read that track 7 is bad. I’ll get it sorted today sometime, I promise. When I do, I’ll post a comment here.

    @wren:

    By track 6, I assume you mean Neat Neat Neat? The song seems to play in it’s entirely for me. Anyone else out there having any problems with it, let me know, please!

    It is a great tune though. The Damned are maybe the most under appreciated punk band ever. Maybe because they were so ahead of their time, I don’t know. Their sound was definitely a huge leap forward for punk. Plus, where some of the 70’s punk sounds a little dated, they still sound fresh as hell!

    Heya DJ Info! I was able to get a hold of the dalbello LP thanks to Saltyka. I just want to thank you again for posting the b.o.l.o.

    Hoping you are having a great time. Just wanted to add my two cents (how special! - LOL) about the Damned. My favorite is the instrumental version of In Dulce Decorum which can be heard here:

    Any chance you could fix track 7? It won’t download.

    This is a great post, by the way.

  • 12 Infonistacrat // May 21, 2008 at 10:07 am

    @Paul:

    Unfortunately, the track is at home, a couple thousand miles away. I will definitely fix it as soon as I get home on Friday. My apologies for the inconvenience. I originally thought I had the track on my laptop, but it turns out I didn’t.

    Cool. Thanks again.

    @Entrailicus:

    I’ve made it a point to spread the influence of John Peel though out the US. His influence on modern music is immense, yet outside a few enlightened folks I’ve met in cyberspace, he is completely unknown here. Even the hardcore music lovers I know in person have no clue. Thanks for the compliment!

    This is cool bro, but I can’t make it play on my end :(
    Anybody else having the same problem?
