SONGS I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT, VOL 3

May 15th, 2008 · 6 Comments

Well, folks, this is it. This is is. I’m heading out tonight for a mental break, a desperately needed vacation. I was going to not do any posting for the week I’m gone, but I’ve changed my mind. I think I’ll try to post, even if they are smaller. We’ll see. In the meantime, enjoy the last day of music I consider essential to my survival. Really, these are songs that have a lot of meaning to me.

Just a couple thoughts on todays lists. First is the Dramarama song, Anything Anything. Definitely an under rated song, but a severly under rated band. But as great as that song is, the album it’s off of is even better. Cinéma Vérité is one of the sharper albums of the 80’s, and if you can find it, do your self a favor and pick up a copy of it. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Second is Jane Says. I much prefer the live version to the recorded version. It just has way more funk, more soul to it. It’s just a better overall version. The song has always been a fav or mine…to me at least, it ushered in the alternative movement of the 90’s.

The Counting Crows song has special meaning to me. In the mid 90’s, I had just gone through another brutal divorce. I had met a fabulous woman, and thought I was madly in love. But I carried a lot of baggage with from the 10 years prior, and by 1995, I was mentally beaten down and pretty much depressed. So I let her go. Walked away from the relationship. This song just kind of reminds how painful it was living without that woman. This year, I’ll be married to that woman for 12 great years. Without her, I can’t imagine life.

Last is the Jimmy Buffet song. I know, it seems out of place. But the song itself is a great story of over coming the tragedies of live, and making the best out it. It’s a song that kind of sums up my entire life….”Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I have a great life all the way”.

  1. The Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated
  2. Dramarama - Anything Anything (I’ll Give You)
  3. The Replacements - Bastards of Young
  4. Counting Crows - A Long December
  5. Live - Lakini’s Juice
  6. Janes Addiction - Jane Say (Live)
  7. Bush - Glycerine
  8. Collective Soul - The World I know
  9. REM - Night Swimming
  10. Everclear - Father of Mine
  11. Gin Blossoms - Found Out About You
  12. Foo Fighters - Everlong
  13. The Damned - Ballroom Blitz
  14. Pere Ube - Final Solution
  15. Jimmy Buffet - He Went To Paris

    Dude just want to say ‘love your blog!!!’ Great taste in music - just joking - it’s the stuff that takes me back. That Dramarama track i haven’t heard for at least ten years and i loved it when it came out.
    Thanks and keep up the good work. Will check back regularly for sure. And thanks for the downloads!

    You take your time to yourself and never mind about this place. Nobodys going to die if you don’t show up for a well earned week.
    As the four lads said, turn off your mind. relax and float downstream.

    @mac:

    I appreciate those sentiments. Sometimes, I get way too caught up in what originally started as a hobby. This series of posts, though, really invigorated me. I think I must have been feeling sorry for myself for getting older. Like I had a damn thing to say about it! I suppose big life events will do that to you.

    Anyway, yeah, I am going to go clear my mind, chill, have some tequila, and relax. So if some of my posts here seem a little on in the next week, blame it on the alcohol! :-D

    Great series. That list on part 3 reads a lot like my list of ’90s favourites would be. Everlong is such a tune (the version on Skin & Bones is mindfuckingly good).

    Have you seen the Collective Soul DVD Home? I love the version of The World I Know, though they do not improve on Shine.

    And A Long December….I never get tired of that song.

    @AMD:

    Man, I could not agree more on everything you said here. Everlong is def the best that Foo Fighters have done. They have lots of great tunes, but to me, nothing comes close. I have NOT seen the Collective Soul DVD, I’ll have to Netflix that one. Thanks for the tip! Collective Soul had such a great run in the 90’s. I remember hear Hint’s, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid for the first time, and was blown away. It’s still one of my fav albums of the 90’s. And judging by how many copies have “disappeared” from my collection, I’d say other people I know feel the same way!

    I saw Counting Crows and Live in like ‘99 or 2000, and while it was an amazing show (still two of my fav bands), Counting Crows was a little disappointing. Of course, compared to the energy of Live, a lot of bands would come up short!

    BTW, I don’t know if I ever mentioned the fact that I dig the hell out of your blog. You have a great twist on the whole music blog thing. Seriously, where else you gonna find Burt Bacharach, James Brown and David Bowie on the same blog? Well played!
