SONGS I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT, VOL 2

May 14th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Day two of my look at my favorite songs of all time. I’m being totally selfish this week, and posting what I like, regardless of the fact I’ve posted it before. Without further ado, here is todays list.

  1. Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf - I’ve mentioned this before, I think. This song was a favorite of mine in the early 80’s. It had a special meaning to my ex and I that I won’t go into here, mainly because kids may be reading.
  2. Supertramp - The Logical Song - It was the summer of 1979 on a trip to Geauga Lake amusement. I was there on a field trip with my friends from the Boys Club. I met a drop dead gorgeous girl there, and we spent the entire day running around the park, and making out like mad. My friends were crazy jealous. For one day I was the man. I never saw her again, tragically. This song played that day, and it will forever remind me of being 16.
  3. The Knack - My Sharona - Who doesn’t like this song? I scrapped up the money to by this album, mainly for this song. The same of it is that I could have saved money, bought the single, and been a lot better off. Still, a timeless classic.
  4. Devo - Mongoloid - The first Devo song I ever heard. To say it changed my life would be to understate it’s importance to me.
  5. Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus - DM at its best. This is just such a great song. There are a few other DM songs I like almost as much , but none more. Brilliance all the way around.
  6. The Cure - Boys Don’t Cry - In 1980, I was a skinny outsider. I was gifted athletically, so the jocks tolerated me. I loved to party, and hung out with the stoners, but because I was also pretty smart, I was never fully accepted. The brainiacs tolerated me, mainly because I won the science award in junior high, and always did well in competitions. I was the proverbial man without a country. I suspect the most successful people out there have the same story to tell. For me, this song sums up a lot of what I felt in 1980.
  7. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now? - One of the few Smiths songs I actually liked back in the day. Looking back, I was a bit of an idiot. I appreciate the Smiths a hell of a lot more now.
  8. Modern English - I Melt With You - Classic 80’s. Who doesn’t love this song? I wish it wasn’t so commercial.
  9. The Psychedelic Furs - Love my Way - My favorite Furs song, hands down. Pretty in Pink may have been more successful, but this is brilliant.
  10. XTC - Senses Working Overtime - Like I Melt With You, this is just pure classic. And a hell of a lot of fun.
  11. Dinosaur Jr. - Freak Scene - Great song, great memories the navy, most of them not really coherent. Yeah, I drank a lot in the Navy. Thats what we did. We went to sea, we listened to great music, and we drank. Oh, and we cursed. I still make it a habit to practice 3 of the 4 regularly.
  12. Pixies - Hey - Perfect song. Perfect group. Kim Deal is haunting at the end with her “chained” vocals, and Joey’s guitar is sings the entire way though the song. Love it.
  13. Pixies - Wave Of Mutilation - Black Francis’ tribute California surf music. This is by far my favorite Pixies song, by far.
  14. Gun Club - Sex Beat - Best song off the best 80’s album by one of the most underrated bands of all time. Fire of Love is an album I’ve listened to almost weekly for close to 25 years now, since I first discovered it. When people ask me to name one must have album, thats the one. Close second…Double Nickles on the Dime by the Minutemen.
  15. The Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town - Life in Ohio in 1985 was pretty bleak. At least it was for me. This song, to me, summed up everything about living in a small Ohio town. I was hooked on the line “in Winter 1963 It felt like the world would freeze, With John F. Kennedy and the Beatles.” I was born in Dec. of 1963, so it caught my attention. I left my small town, and Ohio, the next year, and only recently started going back. I still love the song, and it will always remind me of the home I left, before I became a permanent wanderer.

    Life in a Northern Town is by far one of my favorite songs, not to mention one of the greatest songs of that era.

    Great list. I empathize with the high school scene. I was a Navy brat, so I sympathize with a bit of the other stuff. Made high school a real treat…

    Just goes to show, we all of us differ sometimes. I cannot abide anything Dream Academy ever released, in particular “Real gone kid”, which still makes my teeth grind if I’m unfortunate enough to hear it on the wireless.

    @mac:

    That’s funny. I have bands to which I have the same reaction as well. Mainly 80’s hair bands, but recently, I’ve developed the tendency to vomit when Mariah Carrey’s name is mentioned, or when she started to sing. :-)

    @Jim:

    I hate to say high school sucked, because that seems to be so cliche. But it’s true. I sat in the back of the class, kept my mouth shut for the most part, and at lunch time went to the alley across the street and enjoyed the smell of those funny cigarettes that were so common in the late 70’s early 80’s. If you know what I mean. :-)
