SOME GREAT DREAMPOP HITS FOR YOUR MONDAY MORNING

May 5th, 2008 · 2 Comments

A couple weeks ago, I did a shoegaze post, and in the process got back in touch with my love for Swervedriver. For some reason, dreampop, and it’s shoegaze offspring, is one of those genre’s I get really get hot and cold about. I go for a long time, and think nothing of it. Then I hear a song from Swervedriver, or My Bloody Valentine or even the Swirlies, and BAM!, it’s back on. So for the past few weeks, I’ve been listening to a lot of dreampop and shoegaze. So it’s only natural I would do a list on it here.

Here’s a little irony for you all. This blog, as you all can tell, is mainly centered around music from the 80’s in general, and a lot of it is from the mid-80’s in particular. My daughter was born in 1985, in the midst of one of the great musical decades ever. Well, this weekend, I am heading to watch her graduate from college. A prouder person there won’t be on Saturday. It all makes my head spin, and puts a frame around the time between then and now. Amazing.

Enjoy the graduation, proud Poppa! I am very proud of everything my daughter has achieved, as well. :-)

I love shoegaze. Some faves that are missing are Verve and Adorable. I know it’s impossible to showcase all of them, but wanted to get in a plug for those two. And of course, my favorite unknown, “Evermore” from Brisbane - not the pop band that’s out there now, but the original from 1995 - Jason Matthews, Steve Young, Alexandra Transfeld and Sam Andrews. They’re very best: Wishing Well

I’m not too familiar with shoegaze, trip-hop (an option in my mp3 classifications) or dreampop as genre. Is this where you would classify the Stone Roses and the Charlatans UK? I like this style a lot when I am in the mood for it.
