WHERE IS MY MIND?: A TRIBUTE TO THE PIXIES

April 9th, 2008 · 6 Comments

11:15 Site Update: Please excuse my monkeying around. I am slowly working through the issues of having to rebuild, as well as trying to make some changes to the site to make it a nicer, better place. As you can notice, I am replacing the iPod with another skin, and then moving it down.

In 1999, there was a decent little tribute to the Pixes made by mainly punk-pop and ska bands. If you know anything about me, you should know that I absolutely adore the Pixies. I’m not going to go so far as to call them the best band of the late 80’s/early 80’s, but they are certainly in the top 5. So when found this collection out on the internet, I couldn’t resist giving it a listen. It turns out that this collection was actually the original album and a few covers thrown in as well. In all, there were 20 songs. I picked out what I think are the best 15 for your listening pleasure.

Also, as promised, I am starting a new feature. I’ll be posting a video, and then a link to the iPod version of the video in case you want to save it. The link to download the video is at the bottom of the video. So, without further delay, here is the first of my videos. The video is from one of the legendary concerts…the Pixies at Brixton Academy in 1991. I would give a great treasure to have been there. In 1991, the Pixies were at the top of their game…if not near the end of it. The crowd looks absolutely electric. In this video of Tame, you can almost feel the surge of the crowd every time Black Francis lets loose one of his infamous howls. And Kim Deal looks…well, Kim Deal looks as amazing as she ever was. I would imagine that anyone who was there would say it was the best concert they ever went to. Not hard at all to imagine. Enjoy the vid, and enjoy the music!

Why thank you kindly Miss P! I’m still sorting things out, obviously. I guess catastrophe is turning into the catalyst for change. Right now, I’m trying to balance those changes with rebuilding. I’ll sort it out eventually. But for now, if things look a little messy, it’s because it is. :-)

Thanks for all the hard work — looks like it’s paying off..

My little Zaurus PDA had some trouble with the original video, but converting it to something playable was quick and easy enough.

(I used http://media-convert.com/ to resize it from 320×262 to 320×240, convert it to AVI, and (though this last step may not have been necessary) change the audio codec to MP3. Here the link, good for 24 hrs, in case you want to check out the result yourself: http://media-convert.com/convert/?xid=15-uzgamuwc )

Nice choice for your first video, btw.

Glad you like the video. I think it’s one of my favorites of all time. The crowds reaction when Black Francis lets loose is amazing. For a Pixies fan like me, that’s the ultimate.

And speaking of Pixies, or rather members of the group, I hear the new Breeders album is out soon, and supposedly very good. Their heading out on tour…so I have to choose between them, or Modest Mouse opening for REM. THAT’S a tough choice!

The new Breeders is already out!

    Steve,
Right after I wrote my comment, I went the the 4ad website, and saw that the album dropped on the 7th. I guess I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow!

I also checked on concert dates for The Breeders. I was surprised to find the tickets EXTREMELY affordable at $18 apiece. Their playing mainly small venues, including one near Detroit. Now, I just have to talk the wife into going. Her taste in music is…ummmm…..lets just say not as developed as ours!
