GREAT SONGS OF THE POST PUNK REVIVAL

April 1st, 2008 · 8 Comments

I spend a lot of time on this site looking back at the distant past (well, maybe not that distant) and the music that we all enjoyed back then. Sometimes, though, we can get so caught up with nostalgia that we don’t see the great stuff happening in the hear and now. For instance, there is a pretty decent post punk revival going on, and has been for the past 7 or 8 years. I’m not going to pretend I know a whole lot about it, because I don’t. But I know enough and have heard enough to know that this revival is just a talented, and musically just a varied, as the original post punk movement that start 30 years ago.

Lots of great little songs and bands on the list today. I’m particularly fond of Interpol. Their “Turn on the Bright Lights” album, if released in 1980, would probably be considered on of the greats of all time. It’s an amazing album, and honestly, if you’ve not heard the entire album, it’s a treat. nlike so many artists now days, Interpol seems to be an album orientated band. Listening to any one song apart from the album is completely different than hearing it in the context of the whole. It really is an amazing piece of work.

British Sea Power is the other great band on here. Again, they seem to be more album oriented, especially on their latest CD, “Do You Like Rock Music?” Also worth checking out is their amazing first album, “The Decline of British Sea Power”. I’m not going to bullshit you here. This is a seriously talented band, and if you like Echo & The Bunnymen or Joy Division, you will seriously enjoy these guys. I know…thats a HUGE comparison to make. And if I were the only one to make it, I would accept your scorn. But I’m not. So I won’t.

So, just listen for yourself. I think you’ll agree that there are some seriously talented post punk bands out there, even know, making music that some blogger will be writing about in 30 years. Can’t you just see it now…all of us in an old folks home, jamming like crazy, meanwhile, the youngsters taking care of us are in complete awe? I can. Enjoy!

Its very true about Interpol, i usually find that i listen to one song and then have listened to the album on repeat a couple of times. TOTBL is the best for sure :)

I KNEW there had to be another Interpol lover out there somewhere! TOTBL is such an infectious album you can help but listen to it a couple times over.

here’s a third — I dig those guys too. Untitled, Obstacle 1, esp. Say Hello to the Angels.

OLTA and Antics were solid pieces of work too, but not as strong as the debut, still a great number of good tracks.

If you are that much into the great Interpol, what do you think about Editors then ?
In addition to your very decent list:
Over here in Europe the whole PP revival craze was about Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party and Maximo Park (to name the BIG bands) or the likes of smaller groups as The Rifles, Hard-Fi or Robocop Kraus. Are your familiar with their stuff too?

Rosey, I agree, the other albums were great as well, but that first one is such a gem, it would be hard to top it.

Talulagosh, to be honest, I’ve heard very little Editors, only a song or two on the odd mix tape (or cd) I manage to collect. I’ll have to go look for more of their stuff.

I love those big bands you named, especially Franz. That first album was amazingly good. The smaller bands, no, I’ve not heard, or at least, they don’t ring a bell. I have a lot of mix stuff, so I’ll have to dig through that. Thanks for the suggestions! A second revival list is definitely on the way.

Editors is another I am a big fan of as well. Same thing though, first album was great, tough follow with the second but was still strong.

Great article. It’s refreshing to hear quite a few of these types of bands coming out. Frankly I’m not a fan of Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs. Interpol is decent. Why has no one mentioned the Killers? There are some more obscure groups coming out that have a very unique sound, such as the Bravery, and an up and coming group I just discovered, Auto Defiance, who remind me a bit of the Cure with singer often compared to a young Ian McCulloch, or Morrisey.
