POST-GRUNGE HITS FROM THE 90′S AND 00′S, DAY 3

March 28th, 2008 · 7 Comments

I need to vent a little before I get to the music. I had to go on a business trip this past week to Toronto, Canada. Nothing wrong with that…I happen to love that city. The beer is great, the wood is wonderful, the people extremely nice, and the city itself is pretty clean, compared to comparable US cities. The problem was with the incompetent American Airlines.

First, it says something that they loose baggage to often they have to have a staff of people just to deal with it. Wouldn’t that fact have made you sit down and take a hard look at your processes if you lost that much luggage in a year? But OK, shite happens, I understand that. And as a business traveler, I know better than to check my bags. But I did it anyway. And it got lost. The problem was that an hour and a half after I arrived, I had a pretty important business dinner to go to. So I was forced to scramble to find a mall, and then buy a complete outfit. But that didn’t even bother me so much.

What really pisses me off is the attitude of the complete morons in their customer service. When I called to find my bag, I explained the situation, and the fact that I had to go buy new cloths for a dinner. This woman cut me off, almost in mid-sentence, and this is word for word: “Sir, who authorized you to buy new cloths?” You know nothing good was coming of this conversation. I politely explained that I didn’t anyone authorization to buy new cloths, to which she relied, again, word for word: “You do if you expect us to pay for it.”. At this point, I’m getting a little pissed of at being made to feel like I did something wrong here. She explained that regardless, they would only give me $25 for the first day. I explained to her that I couldn’t buy a shirt for $25 bucks, and she came back with this little zinger: “Sir, you must wear some expensive shirts”. I know she is a woman, but she honestly has bigger balls than I do, and I got a set, believe me.

So, I then explained that I had medicine in the bag as well, which prompted a lecture on the mistake I made in checking medicine. By this point, it was mid-night, and I was pretty pissed. “The only mistake I made was believing that you could deliver my bag to it’s destination on time.” Was my close to her. I also mentioned to her that an airline has really only two functions: get the passenger to their destination safely and make sure their luggage arrives with them, on time. I asked her what that says about your business when you routinely fail at half the task your assigned. So, American Airlines, you will be hearing from me on this one, trust me. I don’t like being made to feel guilty when it was your fuck-up to begin with.

On to the music. More of what you might hear on alternative radio in the second half of the 90’s. I was thinking as I was putting these lists together, that is the first half of the 90’s had never happened, we would all probably think this was just awesome, great, unbeatable music. Really, the only fault this stuff had was that it followed, musically, a bight and shining moment in popular music history. Anyway, thanks for letting me rant. And enjoy the tunes!

Two words….”Customer service.” It’s so rare these days.

    Enjoy your weekend. :-)

One of the downsides of a consistently growing economy is… crap service. But man. The $25 remark is just crazy. What happened to the customer being right?

Apparently, they lost that too. Slap-happy morons.

The only tip I can give you, is beeing very aggressive in this matter helps allot. Threaten them with your lawyers. Heck, threaten them with your mother in law. If your patient and pissed enough to threaten them with the local news, they usually give in. Worked for me at least.

You guys are all correct. Customer service sucks huge. I’m going to calling the airlines to let em know how I feel, for sure.

Schubsta, thats a pretty interesting idea. I’m actually going to get my wife on em. She is relentless in cases like this. Somehow, people would rather pay her off than listen to her. Hey…that gives me an idea…. :-)

Blind Melon? Shannon Hoon was dead by October of 1995! How is “No Rain” a “post grunge hit from around the new millenium” and lumped in the same vein as Staind and Wheatus?

Steve, I’m aware of when Shannon Hoon died. I lived in Chicago at that time, and it was pretty big news there. If you go back through my posts, you’ll be apt to find a lot of “contradictions”, like songs that came out in the 70’s lumped into 80’s college rock, or a newer song by a great 80’s group that just fits in an 80’s list, etc. I tend to put songs in lists that I think belong there, and not worry so much about the details. Very subjective, and pretty much is just a spur of the moment thing.

Although I never mind people pointing this stuff out. Hell, I’m just glad you stopped by! So feel free to correct me anytime you like. I promise it won’t bother me at all.

There are couple of songs in this entry that are questionable. “No Rain” being one, “Molly (Sixteen Candles)” “Shine” and “Possum Kingdom”, “Lightning Crashes” being others (all released in 1994). “Comedown” came out in ‘95.

Perhaps the comp itself was named poorly. This is a good collection of songs that came out in the 90’s up through 2001, but there’s not really a theme with this one.
