AN REM HOLIDAY WEEKEND!

Posted by Infonistacrat on Friday, July 3rd, 2009

I’m sitting here in the Detroit airport, waiting on my wifes plane to get in from Cali, and decided that instead of working, it would be better to listen to some music, write up a post, and have a little fun. I can only take work so long, and besides, everyone else in my [...]

SHUFFLING THE iPOD, DAY 3

Posted by Infonistacrat on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Last day in a hotel room for a few days…tomorrow, I am heading home. Sometimes, even with the roughest of jobs, you get a week where the stars align, the universe opens up, and everything goes well. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s a beautiful thing. And make no [...]

BACK TO THE FUTURE, I GUESS

Well, I had the new theme up for a bit, but there were a few tweaks I just could not get worked out. Mainly, I simply could not get it to work with Wordpress Stats. There were a few other things that kind of bugged the hell out of me, that I could [...]

MUSIC OF THE ALTERNATIVE NATION

Posted by Infonistacrat on Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

It’s said that Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction coined the term Alternative Nation sometime around 1991. If thats the case, I was definitely an early inhabitant. Todays post is some of the great music that those of us in the Alternative Nation loved so much back then.

Alternative in 1990’s Chicago meant listening to Q101, wearing Doc Martins, and for me, a goatee and a shaved head. I looked like Edward Norton in American History X, except without the tats. I also did a lot of power lifting back then, so I was about 100 lbs heavier then. I looked the part, thats for sure. Now, not so much. I still have my Doc’s, still lift (though not so heavy), and I still listen to the great bands from the late 80’s and early 90’s. All in all, I still consider myself a proud member of the Alternative nation.

So, today, some of my favorite bands. Fugazi, whose great Repeater album I still listen to over and over, is here. Pavement is also hear. I reached back top the 80’s for some Mission of Burma. Mission of Burma is a band that can hold it’s own in any decade, and That’s When I Reach For My Revolver is a timeless classic. Rage Against the Machine and Nine Inch Nails prove a little attitude. Honestly, though, there is more than a little attitude here…certainly enough to get you through a long humpday. Enjoy!

  1. Alice In Chains – Man In A Box
  2. Butthole Surfers – Who Was In My Room Last Night
  3. Fugazi – Styrofoam
  4. Hole – Doll Parts
  5. Jane’s Addiction – Superhero
  6. Liz Phair – Whip Smart
  7. Mission Of Burma – That’s When I Reach For My Revolver
  8. Nine Inch Nails – Hurt
  9. Pavement – Summer Baby
  10. Rage Against The Machine – Know Your Enemy
  11. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge
  12. Sleater-Kinney – You’re No Rock ‘N’ Roll Fun
  13. Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight Tonight
  14. Soundgarden – Like Suicide
  15. Superchunk – Punch Me Harder

The 90’s hold very few happy memories for me. I tend to gravitate toward the angry, angst-riddled music, some of which you’ve showcased here. Throw a little Radiohead, Live, and Pearl Jam into the mix and it’s a perfect illustration of my psyche back then. Thanks, as always, for a great selection. Michael should be happy – no drum kits! ;-)

I feel your pain there. The 90’s had some rough patches for me as well, and like you, I like the darker, angrier music. I tended not to like the Brit-pop of the time for that reason. It was too purposefully happy, and that wasn’t where my head was at. Thankfully, I’ve changed a bit, and can appreciate that as well. But nothing will replace the angst ridden stuff from the 90’s.

I once had a friend that said that all the bad stuff we go through “builds character.” I’ve found it’s a good way to look at the negative things that happen. And, like you, I really appreciate the 80’s Brit-pop now as a good way to escape. Have a great day *DJ Info.* :-)
