A WEEKEND OF THE MUSIC OF MANCHESTER, VOL 2
Day two of my look at Manchester bands, both old and new. Todays list also shows the diversity of the music that has come out of that fine city. M People and Swing Out Sister aren’t the types of bands I would normally include, but they highlight just how diverse a scene Manchester has been.
I’m enjoying my weekend, resting up from my trip this past week, and looking forward to spring. It was 48 here Friday, and I swear it felt like summer to me. Enjoy!
- Elbow – Teardrop
- Fear Of Music – Better Living
- Happy Mondays – In The Blood
- Joy Division – Shadowplay
- M People – Moving On Up
- Morrissey – Suedehead
- Northside – Shall We Take A Trip
- Oasis – Cigarettes And Alcohol
- Stephen Fretwell – New York
- Swing Out Sister – Breakout
- The Durutti Column – Love Is A Friend
- The Smiths – Bigmouth Strikes Again
- The Verve – Velvet Morning

love your playlists, always try to listen whenever, but being a manc i have to tell you the Charlatans and The Verve are not from Manchester. The Verve are from Wigan, the Charlatans are somewhere close, but both are awesome anyways. other than that, great playlist!

The Charlatans are from the West Midlands. Elbow are from Bury, The Fall from Prestwich, Joy Divison form Salford/Macclesfield, Steve Fretwell from Scunthorpe etc etc. Point is they all played in and around Manchester and it’s pretty much thanks to the laste great Tony Wilson. Nice to hear Magazine – one of the most underrated bands ever. Top choice.

Shakerstu,
I hear what your saying, about the bands not really being from Manchester itself. At least here in the states, the bands you mentioned are closely associated with Manchester. I suppose in the same way the Pixies are associated with Boston, even though Dave Lovering was really the only real Bostonian. (Frank Black was born there, but didn’t grow up there. Kim Deal was from Ohio and Joey Santiago was from Manila and grew up in Longmeadow, Massachusetts)

Oh, and yeah, Tony Wilson, who had a great ear for music, for sure. I also can never get enough of the stuff John Peel did either. I would love to have grown up listening to him.

It’s local sensibilities I suppose. Manchester is surrounded by big towns like Bury, Bolton, Wigan, Rochdale etc etc all of which are fiercely independent. And its only 30 miles to Liverpool too. John Peel was one of a kind. As you probably know he started as DJ at WRR-FM in Texas. I once read that he was in Dallas the day that JFK was shot.
By they way if you like Elbow, Guy Garvey has a great show on BBC 6Music. Great show http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/

I can understand that, I suppose, although that fierce independence is pretty much unknown here, at least musically. So, even though Cleveland and Akron are the same distance that Manchester and Liverpool are apart, Pere Ubu and Devo are pretty much considered to have come from the same music scene.
I’m trying to talk the wife into a trip over to the UK…something like start in London, hit Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, etc. And go to a show in each. Hey, a guy can dream, can’t he?

Since Tony Wilson left this earth, there has not really been anyone to bat for Manchester Bands. Because Manchester like Liverpool is known for producing great bands, people try and pretend they are from these two great cities, but they are not. Bring back the word to let more people see great local bands
