CHICKS THAT ROCK! THE ALTERNATIVE 90′S
Today is the last of my look at chicks that rock, and easily my favorite. There were so many great female singers in the 90’s that I could easily do a second day. I have a pretty stellar line up today, and still I left off the likes of Juliana Hatfield, Alanis Morrisette, Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries, Republica, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow or Joan Osborne. Also missing is anyone from the Riot Grrrl genre, which is surprising since I have a great affinity for those groups.
So, topping the list is my ultimate 90’s alternative girl, Shirley Manson. I managed to sneak her in twice, once with a Garbage song, Milk, and once with a song from her former band, Angelfish. Believe it or not, she was picked on pretty badly in high school for her looks, supposedly for her red hair and her eyes. I would love to go to all the idiots who ever laughed at her and smack em in the mouth for being so stupid. She was and always will be the epitome of 90’s alternative girls.
Next on the list is a fellow Ohioan, Kim Deal, with the Breeders. My infatuation with Kim Deal is legendary. She was brilliant with the Pixies, and really shines with the Breeders. The song I picked, Doe, is from the Pod album, which is, by far, their best work.
Throw in Elastica, the group that gets my vote as the most underrated group of the decade, Belly (Tanya Donelly’s band after Throwing Muses and The Breeders), Poe and Lush, and you got a great list. Top to bottom, I would put this list up against any I have done in the 8 months or so I’ve been doing this. I know this was the most fun I’ve had doing a post in a long time. The 90’s were a great decade of music, almost as great as the 80’s (it’s pretty close, but the great underground music of the 80’s tilts the balance). So, I’ll debate a forth version of this list, catching up on some of the great women of rock I’ve missed. Hopefully, you all enjoyed this. I know I did.
- Angelfish – Suffocate Me
- Belly – Untogether
- Echobelly – Natural Animal
- Elastica – Waking Up
- Garbage – Milk
- Hole – Malibu
- Liz Phair – Divorce Song
- Lush – Hypocrite
- My Bloody Valentine – When You Sleep
- Poe – Angry Johnny
- Sleater-Kinney – Get Up
- Sleeper – Swallow
- The Breeders – Doe
- Tori Amos – Cornflake Girl
- Veruca Salt – Seether

Nice mix! Takes me back to the ol’ college days — near your recent stomping grounds no less, at Pitt.
Enjoy the vacation in Chicago!
