AN REM HOLIDAY WEEKEND!

I’m sitting here in the Detroit airport, waiting on my wifes plane to get in from Cali, and decided that instead of working, it would be better to listen to some music, write up a post, and have a little fun. I can only take work so long, and besides, everyone else in my [...]

SHUFFLING THE iPOD, DAY 3

Posted by Infonistacrat on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Last day in a hotel room for a few days…tomorrow, I am heading home. Sometimes, even with the roughest of jobs, you get a week where the stars align, the universe opens up, and everything goes well. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s a beautiful thing. And make no [...]

BACK TO THE FUTURE, I GUESS

Well, I had the new theme up for a bit, but there were a few tweaks I just could not get worked out. Mainly, I simply could not get it to work with Wordpress Stats. There were a few other things that kind of bugged the hell out of me, that I could [...]

GREAT POST-PUNK HITS, VOL 2

Posted by Infonistacrat on Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

So, a little informal poll here. How many people have had a conversation that goes a little something like this: You tell someone that you really love post-punk music. They then ask how can you stand all that screaming and blood and awful sounding noise. It seems that somewhere along the line people started confusing post-punk with punk. Not only that, but I honestly believe that when people think of punk, they assume you mean California hardcore, not the sweet sounds of punk 77. Like I said yesterday, it’s very hard to actually define post-punk. You almost have to play it for them.

Lets take Flipper as en example. Maybe one of my favorite little “undiscovered” bands out there. Certainly sounds very punkish. And you have to admit, any band that decides to just play louder and more obnoxiously until all their fans have left the concert in disgust is a band worthy of the punk label. But Simon Reynolds lists them as a post-punk band.

On the other end of the spectrum, there is Fin Boy Three. VERY new wave sounding. Same with Depeche Mode. And play from Flying Lizards for anyone, they they will tell you right off the bat it’s new wave. Nope. Post-punk. By the way, can we put to rest the notion that most of the band here are one hit wonders? Seriously, just because MTV only played one song doesn’t mean they only had one great song. Can anyone seriously make the case that MTV has even one clue about music? Hands 2 Take soooo much better than Money.

And as a treat, Life Kills by Human League. What so special about that? It’s a great tune off the last album that featured the original Human League line up. After the split there was The Human League, and Heaven 17. Both great bands, but neither as great as the original Human League. Of course that’s my humble opinion. Your mileage may vary, and probably will. Enjoy!
