This is the next progression of last weeks Hidden Gems Of The 80’s post. This time, I take a look at the 90’s and try to find those songs that got a lot of play, but generally have been overlooked since then. Every now and then you’ll hear them played, but not nearly often enough. Today is hits from 1990 to 1994, tomorrow will close out the decade.
The top of the list today is, suprisingly enough, a rap song. If you have never heard Fear Of A Black Planet, you really need to get a copy. Not only on of the best rap albums of all times, but I would dare to say one of the top albums period. The raw emotion and energy in that album just blew people away at the time. Public Enemy was just straight up scary great on that album. After that, the two Cure songs are great. If not for the alternative/grunge movements, the 90’s potentially could have ruled by the Cure. To some people it was. Weezer’s Sweater Song is another great song.
The 90’s might be best remembered as a decade where there was just such a huge diversity in music. Today list shows just that…from the blues of Black Velvet to the Rap of 911, to Nivana’s grungy Lithium, the 90’s had a little something for everyone.
- Alannah Myles - Black Velvet
- The Cure - Pictures of You
- Public Enemy - 911 Is A Joke
- Counting Crows - She Talks To Angels Acoustic
- R.E.M. - Loosing my religion
- Roxette - Joyride
- Nirvana - Lithium
- The Cure - Friday I’m In Love
- U2 - Mysterious Ways
- Hey - Jealousy
- Spin Doctors - Two Princes
- Blind Melon - No Rain
- Smashing Pumpkins - Today
- Counting Crows - Mr. Jones
- Weezer - Undone (The Sweater Song)

Allison, sorry to say I don’t have the answer. I did some research on John Mihelich, and all I could find was a professor in Iowa who authored a pretty cool paper on why Jimmy Buffet is so popular. That name does sound familiar, though, so in the meantime, I’ll keep looking!
