Yeah, I’m with you. What in the name of all that is musical is the alternative 80’s? Well, if you ask me, it’s really nothing more that good old fashioned 80’s new wave…only a little more obscure, and a little better. Sort of in the vein of my College Radio from the 80’s posts. Oh, the term? I got it off an album that was release in the mid 90’s, so while I would love to take credit for that goodness, it was actually some other smart guy. Or not so smart guy.
Anyway, on to the list. First, New Order is great, and I love them a million times over, but they aren’t Joy Division. Yeah, I’m a huge JD fan. Thats not to say that New Order isn’t great. because they are. They just will never be Joy Division in my mind. Also, I have a great cover of a great song by an even greater band. Bauhaus, the single most underrated band of the 80’s, turns a performance of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust that is NOT to be missed. Also check out Yes. Anyone else remember when MTV played Leave It by Yes like 20 times in a row on April Fool’s day in like 1981 or 82?
If you really want the hight light of today, skip straight to Elvis Costello. I swear, that cat has so much talent, he could block out the sun single handedly. Well, maybe not, but he pure genius. And really, how can you go wrong with pure genius. You can’t, thats how.
