Independent Label Filthy Little Angels

August 7th, 2007 · No Comments

Todays post is a real treat for me. I have been listening to the artists on the Filthy Little Angels label for some time now. If you like your music in the style of Punk 77, that is to say bands like the Clash, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, X-Ray Spex to name a few, then you will LOVE the bands on this label. The music in today’s post is free to download, and purchases can be made from their site at pretty affordable prices. The label makes it pretty easy to access their music, with a great website as well as an attractive Myspace page. There are artists of other genres in their catalog that you can sample as well, so do yourself a favor and check out their artists listing for samples. More to come in the future for what I consider the best of the independent labels! Myspace pages here and here as well.

Clicking on the artists name takes you to the artists website in a new window.

Starting off today are the Leatherettes, a band that flat out rocks. This boy/girl duo from Scotland comes at you with a hurricane force, playing straight up rock tinged with more than a little bit of old school puck. They list as influences The Cramps, The Gun Club, The Kills, Stooges, Royal Trux, The Clash, New York Dolls, Suicide, Primal Scream, The Rolling Stones. Not a bad list, if I do say so myself.

Next up is Captian Polaroid, whose deep lyrics and fuzzy guitar work take hold of you in a way that is not as urgent as the Leatherettes, but just as strong all the same. His lyrics tell a tale of broken hearts and corrupt politics, all in an accessible manner. Personally, I love the Lo-Fi genre of music, and this guy hits a homer.

And What Will Be Left Of Them? is a band playing a hybrid of new wave and punk pop that throws some catchy riffs and intelligent lyrics at you in a fun wall of sound. Have Yourself a Filthy Little Christmas is just a great track, almost the highlight of the entire playlist, and one of the best songs I have heard in a very long time. Their Myspace page also has a few other tracks if your interested.

Aria C Jalali! (pronounced “ar-E-uh see ja-la-lee”) is an interesting artist from San Francisco. The track is supurb, and I can’t believe this guy has not hit it huge yet. The song reminds me of 80/90’s jangle pop, but the lyrics are deep and broading, creating a mood that is unique and beautiful at the same time.

Billy Ruffian is pure punk, in the best tradition of the London Punk 77 style. Coming at you with an intensity of the Sex Pistols, these guys are a breath of fresh air to people like me who love that classic punk sound.

October All Over is another band from the UK (in my opinion, the UK produces the best music, by far), and is led by a phenomenal female singer, Sophie Haines, who is spot on all the time and honestly one of the best. Along with the Leatherettes, these guys are by far on my favorites short list.It would be easy to label these guys as punk pop, or proto punk, or any of a dozen other labels, but the fact is that these guys are amazingly versatile, and can go from hard core metal to power pop in the blink of an eys. Go to their website for even more info!

The International Karate Plus, the last group in the set, is another versatile band, going from sweet pop melody to punchy power pop in a the blink of an eye. More of these guys on their Myspace page…don’t miss em, because I can see these guys breaking huge soon!

Sit back and enjoy this big slice of musical awesomeness!
